About the handbook
Old Wives’ Remedies collects household advice of the kind passed between neighbours and written on the inside covers of recipe books: a gargle for a sore throat, vinegar for the windows, ice for gum on a school jumper.
Each entry keeps the tradition on the page and then says, in plain words, what the guidance we checked actually supports. Sometimes that is encouraging. Sometimes it is the opposite — a familiar shortcut that the evidence advises against. Both belong in a handbook worth trusting.
Where the site stands
- 55 prepared entries across eight categories, written from cited sources.
- A research backlog of further topics that are deliberately not published yet.
- Health, skin-treatment and pet entries are marked professional review pending. No clinician or veterinarian has reviewed them.
- Policy pages are written in plain language and have not yet had formal legal review.
What it is not
It is not medical, veterinary, legal or professional advice, and it is not a diagnosis tool. There are no visitor accounts, no newsletter, no shop and no adverts. Read the editorial policy for how entries are written, and the disclaimer for the limits of everything here.
